Going Digital with

the Inquiry Project

What happens when you take the inquiry approach to research writing and bring it into a digital space?

Thinking and Blogging.

In order to get students thinking about what they may want to inquire into, we use the Blog on Wix to get them digging into some different ideas and using the platform itself. Blogging in this way allows them an outlet to get out their thoughts on controversial topics, respond to their classmates, and see what inquiry thinking and writing can look like.

Student Inquiry Blogs:

Pre-Search and Research.

The Research (Presearch) Subpage--I ask my students to create a research subpage on their website to house a "living bibliography of their inquiry research. In order to do this, they include the links to articles they find, useful images or graphics, videos or news stories, and pdfs of academic research. After or before each item, they should include 1-2 sentences on what the item is and if it will be helpful for their project. They can organize it in any way that they would like, but I suggest that they do have an organization method.

Joining the Conversation.

For the final inquiry project, I have created a number of different assignments. What I try to do is have the project reflect the goals and conversations we have in class and online. My classes tend to operate around a theme of exploring and challenging cultural myths and narratives; therefore, the inquiry projects tend to reflect that conversation. Since we are looking at the conversation and propogration of cultural narratives, I ask my students to represent those cultural conversations as well as the academic ones in their final project. If you feel like the projects focus too much around pop culture, it's on purpose because it is reflecting what we value in our culture. The conversation about social narratives develop in popular culture and I wanted to have them represent the whole conversation--not only the academic one.
