Participatory

Pedagogy

"Participatory pedagogy enacts the deoedipalized, ever-morphing writing subject, encourages choric invention and continuous remix, plays the listening game in all its manifestations and engages in both critique and performance with each act of composition"

Post-Process

A Post-process theory of writing is reacting against the teaching methodologies set up by the process theory of writing (pre-write, write, revise, repeat) since it seems reductive and limits writing to codified phases. Post-process pedagogy was not only a reaction against process writing, but it was also working alongside post-modern thought. Thomas Kent explains, "most post-process theorists hold three assumptions about the act of writing: (1) writing is public; (2) writing is interpretive; (3) writing is situated" (103).

Some argue that post-process is a theory (a mindset) rather than a pedagogy and Lee-Ann M. Kastman Breuch's essay, "Post-Process 'Pedagogy': A Philosophical Exercise" brings up many of these separation questions between theory and practice.

Kent claims, "the postprocess mindset, then, rights writing by placing textual production, which is always interpretive, public, and situated, as the rightful object of our attention" (105).

Post-pedagogy is often feared as the prophesy of the obsolescence of teachers, but it is not a call to do away with teachers...just the ACT of teaching. Victor Vitanza calls postpedagogy, "a pedagogy other(wise), what we want is a pedagogy without criteria..what we desire is a counterpedagogy, which expresses the 'desireto escape to pedagogical imperative: a desire... to do away with pedagogy altogether" (109).

Arroyo clarifies his point that we are "doing away with pedagogy altogether" with "we are doing away with the notion that what we teach and how we teach it are predicated on the codified assumptions of a theory (legitimized by the discipline) that is first interpreted and then acted upon" (110)

Pedagogy

"Any pedagogical situation should be considered as a scene for inventions to come into appearance by creating the conditions for participation. We relinquish the discourse of mastery. We place value on the aspect of chance and emerging networks. We access a choric space for writing and teaching" (111).

"Participatory composition addresses the convergence of the visual, verbal, aural, and corporal by removing the hermeneutic requirement of analysis and instead advocating production and participation in every writing gesture, largely defined." (Arroyo 10)
